There are times when we feel truly present with what we are doing, happy with where we are in our life and who we are with. At moments like this we are living our life fully, and are able to enjoy the experience. We are not wishing that we were elsewhere. Most of us know that happiness comes from this inner peace of mind and contentment.
However, this is not always the case. We all experience times when we are under pressure and stressed, which makes daily life difficult. This may be due to the pace of life in Ireland today, the continual worries about the economic climate, the effects of the recent recession or the current demands of a job. It may be due to relationship or family pressures, or if we have to adapt to changes in our life. Whatever the cause, we may find that we have lost ourselves along the way and that relaxed moments are a rarity in our lives. We need to find a greater balance and sense of direction.
This site introduces you to the area of Mind-Body Medicine, to the concept of Mindfulness as one coping strategy to help you move toward a happier, healthier life, and to Mindfulness-Based courses and Stress Reduction Courses in the Carlow/ Kilkenny area.
Mindfulness is a meditation-based medical intervention which has significant worldwide and Irish research evidence for its physical and psychological effectiveness.
For example, research in St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin has shown the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions on clinical outcomes and the immune regulation of physiological markers of psychological experiences faced by those suffering from cancer. In the same hospital the Department of Dermatology are conducting new research with psoriasis patients using the 8 week mindfulness based programme. And research carried out in Dr Steeven’s Hospital in Dublin found that patents with heart problems who were suffering from depression showed significantly greater improvement by using mindfulness than did patients without this support.

The MBSR Course is the longest established and best researched way of establishing the benefits of mindfulness in your life. There is increasing evidence in support of these health benefits, with almost 75% of GP’s in the United Kingdom stating that it would be good for all patients to learn mindfulness meditation skills.

Mindfulness is a powerful tool to use in this age of anxiety, with its 24/7 working week and relentless pressures. Research shows that it reduces stress. However, it does more: paying attention regularly to the positive things in our life each day – however small – balances the tendency to find fault with aspects of our lives, which can lead to self-doubt and fear.
In other words, mindfulness does not just reduce stress, it frees us to enjoy life more.
